Lawless Deeds

Titus 2:14

"Jesus Christ gave Himself for us that He might redeem us from every lawless deed.”

All of us make mistakes and all of us sin and commit "lawless deeds." Here is a wonderful thought; God sent His only Son to save us and cleanse us from the negative results of sinfulness.

God loves you and I so much that He gave His son, Jesus Christ, to cleanse us of all the wrong things that we do. What a promise, what a blessing, hallelujah!

Hunger

Have you ever been hungry, ate something and realized it didn’t satisfy your hunger? It seems this happens way too often for me. The other night I was so hungry for breakfast. After fixing and eating an omelet, I was unsatisfied. Jesus said in John 6:35, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me shall never hunger.”

We have to eat regularly to keep our body alive. We all have natural hungers. But, in this passage Jesus is discussing spiritual hunger. If we allow Him, He will fill the empty places in our lives with His mercy, love and grace. We are fed by His presence.

Focus On the Important Things

When we get up in the morning, we really never know what the day will bring. Sometimes things start out good and get better. Other times things start off bad and get better. Then other times things start off good and get bad or start of bad and get even worse. Let me suggest this, when you get up in the morning, go over your schedule with the Lord. Pray, "Lord, You've already seen this day that I'm about to experience. Tell me the things that are important today and then help me to focus on them."

I promise taking this approach will never hurt. Have a blessed day

Enjoy the Blessings of Your Work

Ecclesiastes 3:22

"I saw that there was nothing better than that all should enjoy their work, for that is their lot."

With Spring always comes a lot of tasks left undone through the Winter months. Spring cleaning, yard work, planting flowers, etc. I am always amazed by how few people enjoy the many blessings God has given to them. We work and work yet so often we fail to stop and enjoy the blessings of the work. This verse says that we should enjoy our work. Enjoy the blessings that come to you today. You may have labored hard on a project. Enjoy the blessings that come from that.

Whatever you are doing today, take a break and enjoy the many blessings.

Our Good

Romans 8:28

"We know all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to God's purpose."

We can casually quote this verse or we can really believe it and take hold of it. If we do take hold of this, we will know that something good can come from every situation that we face today. I want to remind you today that we are God's people and therefore God is working things out in us for our ultimate good.

A Step of Faith

James 1:22

"Be doers of the Word, and not merely hearers only".

I remember years ago seeing a sign in an office, which said: "After all is said and done, more is said than done." I always smile when I think about that thought. The truth: we often talk more than we act. This verse reminds us not only when we read the Word should we be blessed by hearing it, but we should take action upon that Word.

Taking action is a step of faith, and God always honors a step of faith. I hope you will take that step today.

Spend Some Time With Him

Revelation 3:20

Jesus said: "I am standing at the door knocking, and if any one hears my voice I will come in to you and eat with you and you with me."

I want you to think of a time when you enjoyed a wonderful meal with a friend. That is the same concept explained in Revelation 3. Jesus wants to just come in, sit down with us, and enjoy some intimate moments. Why don't you sit down in a quiet place, and spend some time with Him today.

My Mouth

Exodus 4:12

"God said to Moses, 'Go and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you should speak.”

When I read this I thought now this is really strange -- "I will be with you mouth." Maybe it is God's way of saying, "I will let you know what you should or should not say." Today, I encourage you to say this simple prayer -- "God, let my mouth bless others and you."

You Have My Word On It

The guy that does the Men’s Warehouse commercials always ends his pitch with, “You have my word on it.” Unfortunately now days we are skeptical because so many of us have been burned by someone who gave us their word and reneged on it.

As a pastor I have always tried to give my word and keep to it. I did that before becoming a pastor too. Sometimes I fail, sometimes I forget but most of the time if I know I can’t keep a promise I will not make it.
I have tried to encourage our church to be a people of acceptance, tolerance and love. No matter where people are in their spiritual journey we need to embrace them and help them grow as Christians. Did you know that God will meet you just were you are? He will, and you have my word on it!

Marvel At His Grace

I marvel at creation. God is a master artist, sculptor, designer, and inventor. It has been said that He can make old things look new and new things look old. When God gets in a creative mode, He holds nothing back. Just looking at our universe, it is stunningly beautiful, staggering in complexity, and extravagant in all regards. I love to be outside and just explore God’s wonders.

While creation can be breathtaking, I marvel even more at His grace. When God created the Heavens and Earth He did it perfectly. Only when Adam and Eve chose freely to sin did creation become imperfect. The only way to cover the marring left by man’s sin was for the Great Artist to make a brush stroke with His grace. I love this poem by Bennard.

Yes, God was so great in creation,
But greater, much greater in grace!
For when man had sinned and had grieved Him,
He sent Christ to die in his place. —Bennard

Ravens

1 Kings 17:6 NIV (Talking about Elijah the Prophet)

6 The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook.

I don’t know how much you know about ravens but they are scavengers. They will find some animal that is already dead and eat from it. Ravens are not known for eating live food or killing something themselves that is fresh. No, they eat the discarded, the trash. Knowing this I wonder how many of us would have been in the frame of mind of Elijah to receive this gift of provision from God.

David McCasland said, "Those who let God provide will be satisfied."

Sometimes God’s answers to your prayers are not packaged and presented to you in the fashion you are accustomed to or are expecting. Nevertheless, if you will receive His blessings, you will be satisfied. Don’t turn up your nose at something God is providing for you today. It may be just what you need to keep going.

Pilgrims

I had the privilege this morning to have breakfast with a great man of God. He wasn’t someone famous, or rich, he really doesn’t stand out in a crowd. No this guy is just ordinary. But what fascinates me about him is that he is a pilgrim. Hebrews 11 gives us a list of pilgrims, men and women of great faith that did extraordinary things.

We have modern day pilgrims that we all know. My parents, my former pastor W. L Rains, many of my mentors: Dr. Morris Sheats, Dr. Sidney Westbrook and Rev. Allen (Tex) Groff, my 6th grade teacher, Mrs. Lois McCain and a host of others. These people were pilgrims that made a mark in my life and the lives of many others.

The author of Hebrews (Heb. 13:7). reminds us to remember the pilgrims who have gone before us, especially those “who have spoken the Word of God” to us. He tells us to consider the outcome of their conduct, and he encourages us to follow their faith.

As my friend shared with me stories of his Christian journey; tears streamed down his cheeks. Right there in the restaurant the Holy Spirits anointing rested heavy on my Christian brother. There is no doubt that his journey hasn’t been easy but he recognizes that God is his portion and strength.

I just wanted to share that with you today. Have Faith, God is in Control!

Sin Drains Our Power

Sin drains our spiritual power; confession restores it.

I was watching a show on the science channel called Build it Bigger. They did a piece on wind generators.
Researchers discovered that wind-power generators worked fine at slow speeds, but at high-wind velocity, bugs on the blades reduced power output. Operators found that it was necessary to regularly wash off the buildup of dead insects to avoid having them slowly decrease the turbine’s power.

That got me to thinking. Did you know that a buildup of sin in a Christian’s life can be a problem as well? God has provided a way to clear the accumulation of sins from our lives. 1 John 1:9 reminds us: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” But unless we do that often, we’ll be running on diminished power. That’s because the power for living comes from God and not us (2 Cor. 4:7). When we try to live the Christian life in our own strength, we’ll feel defeated—like windmills robbed of their energy.

Ask God to remove the sin in your life as you begin this new day.

Praise God Today

The Fool

Today is April Fool’s Day, a day in which many will playfully trick you. A fool is a person who is gullible, a chump, a person who is easily taken advantage of, and a person who lacks good judgment.
The Bible is filled with warnings to foolish people and people who act foolishly. It even warns us about talking to a fool. Maybe the saddest thing about fools is what the psalmist wrote:

Psalm 53:1 NIV
The fool says in his heart, "There is no God."
They are corrupt, and their ways are vile;

Today my prayer for you is that God gives you wisdom and discernment in all you do. No fooling!

I Know Who Holds My Hand

Hang with the Optimists

One of the worst things you can do when you are going through adversity is to surround yourself with pessimists, blamers and toxic personalities. Be careful who you share your dreams with. Beware; there are a lot of people who try to talk you out of your dreams and goals.

Let me exhort you today to spend your time with optimists and encouragers. Seek out people of faith. If you can’t find anyone like that just know that I am waiting to hear from you.

Rule of Thumb

Rule of Thumb - Definition: A rule or principle that provides guidance to appropriate behavior.

My advice is to submit your every activity to God and use your skill set as God directs you in those activities. Make sure you are sensitive to God’s leading. Now that is a good rule of thumb!

Fear: A Tool of the Devil

Fear is one of the greatest tools of the devil. He uses our natural fears and our imagined fears to prevent us from walking in God’s fullness. I love what King Solomon wrote in Proverbs 1:33:
But whoever listens to me will dwell safely, and will be secure, without fear of evil.

Let me encourage you today to not be robbed of your blessing. Listen to God and walk in freedom from fear.

Great Treasures

Great Treasures are Waiting to be Discovered!

I heard a story of a father who made a promise to spend 15 minutes a day with his seven year old son searching for treasure. Every day they would go out and find bottles, cans and assorted “treasures” during their excursion. At the end of the year they sold much of what they found and made over $1000. In the process they also found the richness of relationship just being together.

What if we decided to spend 15 minutes a day searching for treasure in the Bible; what would we find? Solomon wrote: “If you seek [wisdom] as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures; then you will understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God. . . . Then you will understand righteousness and justice, equity and every good path” (Prov. 2:4-5,9).

I want you to have God’s absolute best. To obtain that you must have relationship with Him which means spending time in His word and in prayer.

We're Promised Troubles

So many Christians thought once they gave their life to the Lord they would have no worries.

Dave Branon said, “We don’t pray and read the Bible to get a perfect, trouble-free life. Pursuing God is not cause and effect. We do it because it draws us closer in our relationship with the One who is perfect. The pursuit of godliness will not exempt us from trouble (2 Tim. 3:12). But a life dedicated to loving and pursuing God (Heb. 10:22) is always a good idea—no matter what happens.

In this life we are promised troubles. I am glad God is with us especially during those times.

The Mundane

The other day I was taking out the trash. What a mundane task that is. So, to amuse myself I made a game out of it. I used the bags as a hammer throw; you know like in the Olympics. I held on to the handle and spun around several times and let it go. Just as I let go I said, “God let it go in the dumpster.”

I realized what I had just done and had to laugh. First of all because I am a 55 year old man spinning around with a full trash bag and secondly cause I included God in this mundane task I was doing. Ok, here’s the deal. Make it a point to seek God even in the mundane tasks of your life.

PS: The bag landed in the dumpster!

Be A Donor

I marvel at modern medicine. In my lifetime we have seen doctors successfully transplant multiple organs to those in need from matching donors. We recently heard the news of a woman who received a face transplant. For years people with vision problems have received cornea transplants.

While doctors speculate a complete eye transplant will never occur due to the complexity of reattaching the optic nerve, wouldn’t it be awesome for a blind person to be able to see through the eyes of someone else?

It took me a while to get here today but here is my point. If you look through the eyes of Jesus, you’ll see a needy world. When you do, be a donor of your time, care and attention to the needs around you.

God's Comfort

Utilizing Our Abilities

The book, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, is Jean-Dominique Bauby’s memoir. It describes his life after a massive stroke left him with a condition called “Locked-In Syndrome.” Although he was almost completely paralyzed, Bauby was able to write his book by blinking his left eyelid. An aide would recite a coded alphabet, until Bauby blinked to choose the letter of a word he was dictating. The book required about 200,000 blinks to write. Bauby used the only physical ability left him to communicate with others.

We who are fully functioning many times fail to share a word of encouragement with others. Speaking a kind word to a friend or even a stranger can make a real difference in their day. We also fail to tell others our story that includes our life’s transformation through Jesus Christ. Today I hope you will take full advantage of your abilities to share the good news!

Structure

The Coming of the Lord

Want something to look forward to?

If you missed the remarkable juxtaposition of reflective spheres that sparkled in the night sky on December 1, 2008, you missed the celestial convergence of Venus, Jupiter, and the moon. Don’t fret my friend. On November 18, 2052, you’ll once again be able to peer through the evening darkness as those solar system neighbors “gather” in a tiny area of the sky. Let’s see, I will be 97 years old when that happens.

Maybe I ought to look forward to something else. Ok, I have it. What about the Lord’s return to earth.

52 "in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed."

That’s it! That is what I am looking forward to for me and for you.

The Journey

The Journey

One of the things most people really never get is that reaching the destination many times pales in comparison to the adventure of the journey. I have traveled extensively and sometimes you have an easy trip other times your journey is most difficult.

Let me ask you today. Are you in the midst of a difficult journey that seems almost impossible to continue? If so, be assured that God is providing grace even now to equip you for that journey.

I will guarantee you that there will be a time when you can look back and say, "Look at what God has done because of what I gained on that difficult journey through the valley of despair." Don’t ever lose heart. Trust Him with the outcome of where you find yourself even in the difficult times.

Public Acknowledgement of God

In the recent Texas primary, Ballot Proposition #4: Public Acknowledgement of God-Stated “The use of the word “God”, prayers, and the Ten Commandments should be allowed at public gatherings and public educational institutions, as well as be permitted on government buildings and property.”

At a time when the liberals and the left are screaming for separation of church and state, this proposition brought joy to my soul. In the early days of our country, the Puritans wisely sought to connect all of life to its source in God, bringing the two worlds together rather than dividing them into sacred and secular. I really think they were on to something important that we have gotten away from.

Today why don’t you take a minute and thank God that we live in a country where we still enjoy freedom of worship? While you are at it, be sure you are registered to vote in the November elections.

Life is a Battle

In life the crises and challenges we all go through can strain us to the very end of our strength. It is in such times it is easy to want to give up. But James offers us another perspective. He says that while life is a battle, it is also a blessing: “Indeed we count them blessed who endure.”

In the example of Job, we find encouragement and the power to persevere in life’s darkest hours. That power is deep-seated in God, who is compassionate and merciful. Even when life is hard and so very painful at times, we can persevere because God is there. His mercy endures forever! I pray you are encouraged with this word today.

The Distressed

Proverbs 14:21

He who has mercy on the poor, happy is he.

Not a week goes by that I don’t receive a call at the church office from someone who is distressed due to their economic shortfalls. As a church we support a local ministry that is a food bank, and offers assistance with clothing, and even money for gas or utility bills. So when I get a call, I refer those in need to that ministry.

During these tough economic times, we should be willing help people in need—spiritually and physically. A dollar doesn’t go far these days, but a generous attitude does.

Here is my tip for the day. A good exercise for the heart is to bend down and help another person up!

The Durian

I don’t have a regular routine for sleep. If I lay down before I am totally exhausted I can lie awake for hours. So many times I find myself late at night watching TV. The other night I was watching this guy named Andrew Zimmern on this show called “Bizarre Foods.” This guy travels the world looking for the most unique foods. He lives on a steady diet of bugs, entrails, and foods most of us would call disgusting. I saw him eat a goat’s eyes once . . ugh!

On this one show he was eating a tropical fruit called the durian. The durian is often called The King of Fruits. Either you love it or you hate it. Those who love it will do almost anything to get it. Those who hate it won’t get near it because of its pungent smell.

I am reminded that many-times we look at people the same way; some we find appealing others we find appalling. God is no respecter of persons and neither should we be. He loves the richest to the poorest, the youngest to the oldest. Remember we are to love one another and we are at our best when we serve God by serving our fellow man.

DIRECTION

Proverbs 3:6

Direction comes when we seek God's will first.

The Lord’s Prayer states, “Thy will be done.” 1 John 5:14 states, “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.”

We all need direction. We all have an idea where we want to go in life. Let me just remind you today that if you ask for God’s will to be done in your life clear direction will come.

Good Riddance Day

The other day I was shredding some documents and it reminded me of an event that happened last year in New York called “Good Riddance Day.” People were encouraged to bring their remembrances of bad experiences and bad memories suffered throughout the year to Times Square and either shred or destroy them that day. Some people brought their bank statements; others brought cardboard signs that said “cancer” or “stock market.”

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could just say good riddance and shred our bad memories to be absent from our lives forever? I think the Apostle Paul could have used and industrial size shredder according to his account in 2 Corinthians 12: 7-10. But God said to him, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”
You see, God didn’t take away the problem. Instead, He gave Paul the grace to live with it and He will do the same for you today.

Dual Citizenship

The old radio preacher yelled, “YOU MUST BE BORN AGAIN!”

Nicodemus in his conversation with Jesus was perplexed by this terminology. “How can I be born again” he asked, “can I go back into my mother’s womb?” Of course we know that Jesus told him you are born of the flesh but also must be born of the spirit.

Born of the flesh, conceived in sin,
Then born of the Spirit, new life to begin;
I’ve been washed in Christ’s blood and this will suffice,
Praise God I’m His child, I’ve been born twice! —Brandt

When you are born again, you obtain dual citizenship. Not only are you a citizen of this earth, you also become a citizen of heaven. Pretty cool stuff!

Well Done My CHild

As a corporate manager and business owner part of my job was to do annual evaluations on my employees. I have a philosophy that if you get to evaluation time and your employee is surprised by their evaluation, you really haven’t done a good job as a manager. Evaluations should not contain surprises. If you are doing a good job, or a bad job a good manager will let you know at the time and not wait until the end of the year review.

If your boss invites you into their office, this could be a nervous time for you as you think about what they might say. You may wonder: Could there be a promotion with a pay increase? Or could I lose my job? Am I going to hear, “Well done” or “You’re done”? How does my boss really think I’ve been doing?

Some day at life’s end we are all going to be called into the office. Paul wrote, “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad” (2 Cor. 5:10).

I believe that God speaks to us regularly. We do not have to wait until judgment day to know how we are doing. We will not enter that future evaluation fearful of losing our salvation, nor will we desire personal benefit or human approval. But like our earthly supervisors with our job evaluations, won’t it be wonderful to hear the Master say, “Well done, good and faithful servant?”

How Good Are You?

Years ago I worked as a hairdresser. I have always been somewhat creative and artistic and that was a great vehicle to express my creativity while earning a living. I was a good hair cutter. I was better than most because I worked hard at perfecting my technique, I went to classes; I had tutors and teachers that were awesome with their skills. I thought I was really good until I saw how good the good really were . . . the great artists like Vidal Sassoon, Paul Mitchell, Jeanne Braa, Alan Benfield Bush and many more. When you are in the presence of greatness, you realize how elementary your skill set really is.

Today as a Christian I realize how small and insignificant I am in comparison to the men and women in the Bible and really small in contrast to Almighty God. I am glad today that recognizing our own smallness can cause us to embrace God's greatness. Great and Mighty is He!

A Slippery Road

For years I lived in North Missouri and the winters there can be atrocious. I traveled with a singing group for a number of years and we had an old Greyhound bus we drove around the country to our concerts.

One night while driving home in a snow storm at Hamilton, MO- I hit a patch of ice and spun the bus around. I cannot explain the helplessness I felt as I held on to the steering wheel and that 35 foot long, 8 feet wide, 10 feet tall, 10 tons vehicle circled around me. I remember thinking I was doing well driving in that mess until the tires broke loose on the ice. At that moment all I could say is OHHHHHHHHH! At that moment I realized I really needed God.

Why do we sometimes try to go it alone in life when at every moment we have access to God? In Gen. 28:15 He said: “I am with you and will keep you wherever you go.” And, He assures us: in Heb. 13:5 “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Let me encourage you today to not go it alone. As God to go with you, direct you and clear the slippery path before you.

The Mundane

It is human nature to want to be recognized for our accomplishments. He was first, she was the best, and so on. I think that is ok but sometimes we do thing simply for the recognition and that really isn’t right. So many times we try to determine who deserves the most credit when something is done well and that is often counterproductive

If you remember the church at Corinth was split into two factions—those who followed Paul, and those who followed Apollos. The apostle Paul told them, “I planted, Apollos watered . . . . Neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters” (1 Cor. 3:7). He reminded them that they were “God’s fellow workers” (v.9), and it is God who gives the increase in ministry (v.7).

I like this verse by Horton that says:
Let others have the honors,
The glory, and the fame;
I seek to follow Jesus
And glory in His name.

When we become so concerned about who deserves the credit, it serves only to take away the honor and glory that belong to Christ Jesus alone.

You Gotta Have Faith

I have always been a man of faith. I believe God has a plan for my life and that if I am obedient and faithful to him He will bless and prosper me. I was asked the other day what if you faith fails you? What happens when you don’t see God’s blessings or when what you ask for doesn’t happen?

This has happened to me before and through that experience I have learned that our greatest tests come when we cannot see positive results from our faith and obedience. When that happens we must die to our expectations and entrust them to our Lord. After all, He knows what is best for you.

Servant's Attitude

We are blessed at Santa Fe Christian Church to have so many people with servant’s hearts. I watched at a recent meal time as someone, probably a child, dropped a piece of cake on the floor and walked away. I spotted the food and didn’t want someone to slip on it so I went to find a paper towel to pick it up. As I returned I noticed a woman, who has no small children, bend down and pick up the mess.

No one cheered; no one applauded her, as a matter of fact probably no one but me even noticed. I never said anything to her either, but I sure noted her humbleness and servants attitude. I noticed, but I know that God noticed too. Remember, no deed is too small when done for Christ.

Driving by a darken business late one night I saw a flashing sign that said “Open.” It was obvious that the store was closed and someone forgot to turn the sign off. I love to look at different translations of the Bible to compare one with the other. In doing so I find that clarity often comes.

The other day I began cleaning out my garage. Wow, what a mess. I have put it off for months waiting for the right time, “the perfect conditions.” I realized it is never the right time to clean a messy garage. However, I started and quickly realized it was a multi-day job and I needed some shelving and totes to store stuff in. The bottom line is I started and now I can actually walk around in the garage and find what I need.

Rick Warren says, “God expects you to do what you can, with what you have, wherever you are. Less-than-perfect service is always better than the best intention."

Time Management

Conviction - God's Warning Light

The other day the “check engine” light in my car came on. When that happens; I immediately see a $1000 bill in my future. Knowing that, I decided to drive it for a while. Every day I would get in my car and try to ignore that little yellow light. I’m sure it is my imagination but it seemed to get brighter with each passing day. Finally it got to me and I took the car in for service. I realized that I need to pay attention to warning lights that are trying to get my attention—they can mean something is wrong.

Conviction is God’s warning light.

I ask you this question today, “What warning lights are flashing in your life?” What needs to be tuned up or repaired through confession and repentance? God has time for you today. You can get into Him with no appointment needed.

At Santa Fe Christian Church I have said many times that we worship God in various forms and ways. We worship in music, prayer, communion, scripture readings and giving . . . yes, giving.

I have tried to stress to our people that giving of tithes and offerings is a form of worship. Many have caught on and give joyfully, and generously. Others haven’t really grasped the concept of worship through giving.

For me it has never been about the amount people give, it is really about the attitude of the heart toward giving. Remember this, God looks at the heart, not the hand; the giver, not the gift.

I had a professor in Bible School said this scripture was one that helped keep his marriage together. He humorously added that he had many sleepless nights down through the years.

Sometimes anger calls our attention to an injustice that needs to be addressed, and appropriately so and we are spurred to righteous action. Most of the time, however, our anger is ignited by the violation of our selfish expectations, rights, and privileges.

Anger is a human emotion that God made into each and every one of us. Anger is not a bad thing, but one thing is sure, anger was never intended to continue unchecked.

An Ordinary You

During a recent sermon series called “What God Can Do Through An Ordinary You” I said that when God looks at an individual, He looks at their future, not their past. He is always looking at the person He has created you to become, not the person you are now.
As with Noah, Moses and even King David it took years for them to move into their area of service. Many times people miss God’s plan for their life because they cannot see themselves moving into that role.

Let me ask you this today, “How does God view your life? What is the destiny He has chosen you to fulfill?"

Remember that God see’s your potential. You can do something significant for Him. Just be willing, obedient, patient, and available, and God will use even and Ordinary You!

For a number of years I was in corporate management. I had a warehouse manager that would always say, “People are important; take care of your people and they will do anything for you.” A friend of mine who pastors told me his church motto is, “We Build People.”

My life’s philosophy is “to leave it better than you found it.” That includes people. I have tried to invest a lot of my time in building, training, mentoring and encouraging people. My goal is to bring out a person’s best and help them grow, and to become what God made them to be.

I believe God loves His children and works on their behalf. So many times pastors have been guilty of preaching a prosperity gospel. By that I mean you tell God what you want and He will give it to you. The key to your answered prayers are the underlined words in verse 14, according to His will. So often we ask but don’t ask if it is His will to have it. That is a very hard lesson to learn and from it can come great disappointment.

While God hears your prayers He is not going to answer with something that will be detrimental to you. For that reason we thank God for answering prayer according to His Word!

Betrayal

I am reminded of the story of Peter’s sorrow when he realized that he had betrayed Christ. In Luke 22:62 it says, “Peter went out and wept bitterly.”

To realize we have betrayed a friend, or sinned against God should bring us all to a sorrowful state of mind. Just remember this. God is a merciful God! He loves you and forgives you, and He has provided a method of restoration and redemption.

Obedience

This month I am preaching a series based on Hebrews 11- the Faith Hall of Fame. This scripture is especially poignant to me because I have lived it out. I too went out, not knowing where I was going. It is kind of like God keeps us on a need to know basis. That is probably good because sometimes if we knew what He was calling us to we would be overwhelmed, balk or even refuse.

In Abraham’s case God called him to a new country that brought great wealth. He called Abraham to a new mission which made him the father of nations. And He called him obedient which placed him in the “Faith Hall of Fame” in Hebrews 11.
Listen up. When God is calling you He knows what He is doing. Your job . . . be obedient!

Reading

This year I am committed to reading more. The truth is I hate to read. That is strange because I love to write. I have never been a good reader. My mind seems to drift off into never, never land. However, reading is one way to really broaden your base of knowledge and gain new insights. My mentor Dr. Morris Sheats encouraged me to read outside my interest and my profession. In doing so, I have been exposed to a whole new world.

I find it interesting that when I read a book I gain new insight. I read it a second time and it reaffirms that insight. Yet, when I read the Bible, I may read a verse or passage over and over again and each time I receive new revelation. I urge you today to make a commitment to study God's Word daily and spend time reflecting on His work in your life.

Halfheartedly

It is no secret to those who know me well that I am a procrastinator. It is really not that I don’t want to do things, I just do not want to start if I can’t finish the project completely in the allotted time frame.

I know a man who built a new house. He refused to go in debt for the house so he saved some money built the exterior walls and roof, put in the doors and windows and moved his family in. They built the interior walls and ran the duct work and electrical wiring but ran out of money before they could do any drywall or finish work. They put up drop cloths and sheets on the walls of the rooms and moved their furniture in. Their kids grew up in that setting, partially because the guy I know became comfortable living in that environment, and because they lost focus on getting the job done and done right.

Let me leave you with this today. When God gives you a task, follow through with it to completion. Don't settle for work done halfheartedly.

A Servant's Heart

The other day looked out my office window and saw one of our deacons mowing the church yard. With him was a teenage boy picking up trash and moving things out of the way of the mower. I have watched these two do many acts of service, never calling attention to themselves, just working quietly for the Lord.

I had to chuckle because I remember serving as a deacon years ago and mowing the church yard. Singing and worshiping God as I rode the lawnmower, I never dreamed someday I would be a pastor. Now I am not speaking prophetically over these guys but I know God has a definite call on their lives. They may not be pastors someday but they will always be servants . . . it is in their heart and so it manifests in their actions.

Live Large for God

The book that was so popular years ago, “The Prayer of Jabez,” changed my way of thinking; in essence, a prayer asking God to enlarge his territory. It made me realize that God wants us to dream big, have great faith and work hard to accomplish the dreams that He has placed in our heart.

If you are in business it is not wrong to ask God to give you more business. If you are doing it God’s way, He is waiting for you to ask Him to Enlarge your Territory.

Delay Is NOT Denial

I believe one of the things lost to the American people is the ability to wait patiently. I’ve noticed this in myself waiting for my computer to boot up or even frustrated at the microwave taking too long.

Many times God uses the element of time to help grow us spiritually. Through waiting we really prove the kind of tenacity we have and sometimes during those times our true character shows through.

Remember this today. God is not required to give us instant gratification. He is not subject to our time frames or constraints. God’s will is not determined by our desires. Retirement Can Kill You

I have known of numerous people that once they retire not long thereafter they died. I wonder about things like that. You work hard your whole life so you can retire and poof! You would think that in retirement there would be no stress, you could live a life of leisure.

Researchers at the University of California at Berkeley did an experiment sometime ago that involved introducing an amoeba into a perfectly stress-free environment. Ideal temperature, optimal concentration of moisture, constant food supp—the amoeba had an environment to which it had to make no adjustment whatsoever. So you would guess that was one happy little amoeba. Whatever it is that gives amoebas ulcers and high blood pressure was gone. Yet, oddly enough, it died. Apparently there is something about all living creatures, even amoebas, that demands challenge. We require change, adaptation, and challenge the way we require food and air.

Here is your challenge for today do something out of the ordinary for someone you don’t particularly like. The results from this challenge will amaze you and surprise them.

STORMS

I was watching a show on the Science Channel a while back about storm chasers. These men and women intentionally track and physically go to many of the summer storms that occur in the Midwestern United States with the specific intent of going through the storm.

You have to wonder what drives people to place themselves in the midst of an F4 Tornado. Through their experiences they have obtained incredible scientific data and I would assume some really great stories.

When you go through the storms in your life you too will have some stories to tell. Many of us can reflect back and see how God has always had his hand upon us during those tumultuous times. While God has the ability to calm the storms, He can also help strengthen and guide you through safely to the tranquil and serene places of the soul.

Undivided Attention

Great comfort comes from embracing these two scriptures. As I have sought God, He provided a creative answer to my prayers. I am so appreciative that He is there for us and if we seek Him, we will find Him.

Don't Wait

We often want to wait to do something for God until the conditions are perfect. While our intentions are good, many times we never start. I believe that if you start, God will give you the grace, knowledge and ability to finish strong.

Noah wasn’t a master ship builder when he started on the ark. David wasn’t an accomplished worship leader/ song writer when he was strumming his harp for the sheep. Start where you are, with what you have and ask God to help you. He is more interested in your availability than your ability!

His Plan for You

I enjoy the writings of Os Hillman. In one of his books he asked these questions:
• "Would you be willing to sit in the strategic planning session for your life and agree with the plans God has for your life?
• Could you give God complete freedom to implement that plan, no matter the cost?

Think about it. What if you were Job and had the insight to see into the future plans for your life? Could you say, “yes?” What if you were John the Baptist knowing you would literally lose your head someday; could you say “yes?”

God has a plan for your life. Of course you can alter that plan because of your free will, but He has a plan for you. Let me encourage you to trust God and ask Him to give you the grace and trust in His love for you to say "yes."

One of the features I use frequently is the GPS system that helps me get from one point to the other. Being new to the Houston area I use it a lot when making hospital and visitation calls and going to business outings. You know something funny? When I forget my phone, I have no way to get the guidance I need. I must have my phone in order to get the directions from it.

The same thing happens in our Christian journey. If we want God to guide us, we must invite Him to be with us.

Unconditional Love

Unconditional love is something that really isn’t logical yet as humans we experience and value it. I know that no matter what I have done, my parents love me unconditionally. I take great comfort in the unconditional love my wife has for me. With unconditional love comes confidence in those relationships. Years ago I loved the TV show MASH. One character I liked was Corporal “Radar” O'Reilly.
Radar’s ingenuity intrigued me. He could get anything the MASH unit needed through his “network” of suppliers. If he didn’t have it, he knew where to get it.

As a pastor in a small church we do not have the luxury of being overly wealthy. There are many needy people in our community and when they come to me for help, I have to be creative in finding the resources they need. Fortunately I have a “network” of people and organizations I can turn to in order to help those in need.

What I have learned throughout the years it that Father God is also a great resource. His supply is inexhaustible, His creative provision boggles our imagination, His willingness to meet our need is eternal. Ask, and you shall receive. That is God’s promise to you today.

Goal Setting

As a business owner and as a sales consultant this time of year I always looked back over the past year and looked forward to the next. I was very much into goal setting. I believe I attained a measure of success because I set goals and accomplished them each year.

After years of goal setting, I set a goal one year of setting no goals. A funny thing happened; I had my best sales year ever. I worked just as hard but relaxed because I wasn’t under that constant pressure of meeting my daily goals. That year I didn’t limit myself to my own goals and the results were a record setting year.

Since then I have gone back to setting goals. But now, I realize it is foolish to set goals without first seeking God. He's the only one who knows the future - and He's willing to guide you through it successfully if you just ask.

In college I took a course on World Religions. It was an interesting study. Did you know that Muslims salah (pray) 5 times a day? Salah, Muslims prepare themselves by performing Wudu (Ablution) which involves cleaning the hands, face, arms, head and feet.

Some would call that radical. I call it devotion. I wonder how much stronger Christians we would be if we prayed 5 times a day? Truthfully I think we would see dramatic changes in our life if we just prayed once a day.

The Psalmist David knew the importance of communicating with God. As you think about setting your New Year’s resolutions, consider praying each day. Let’s be a people of prayer!

A Low Profile

I often have people come to me and offer assistance or bless our church and want to remain anonymous. Their intent is not to receive praise or recognition but simply to serve the needs of others by giving generously of their time, talents or treasures.

Sometimes people will serve in obscurity maybe feeling unknown, unrecognized and unappreciated for their efforts. Know this today. If man doesn’t recognize your sacrifice, God does and you are where you are for a purpose. Your reward will be much better than public recognition, it will be eternal so be of good cheer. Your heart is in the right place.

The Have Nots and the Haves

Each year millions of Americans open their hearts and wallets during the Christmas season. I was watching the news the other night and the Salvation Army reports a number of gold coins valued at $1500 each were placed in their red kettles around the Houston area. Locally a there is a ministry called HIS Ministries that gives away literally tons of food during the holidays and toys to needy families.

I have had the privilege to be an “elf” during these toy giveaways. What a joy it is to walk around with a mom or dad and pick out toys for them to give their kids for Christmas. Many of these people are down on their luck or have lost their jobs due to the economy. Because of the generosity of the “haves,” the “have not’s” will be able to enjoy Christmas.

We were all “have not’s” at one point but, God made special provision for us to have the greatest gift ever. This Christmas if you have not received Jesus Christ as your personal savior, my prayer is that you too will be a “have.” Please ask Him into your heart this day.

The Best Christmas Gift

Christmas gifts are wonderful. One of the most memorable Christmas’ I ever had was a few years ago when I was still in college and my daughter and son-in-law were between pastoral assignments and had moved in with us. None of us had money to buy Christmas gifts so my wife suggested we give virtual gifts.

That year we exchanged pictures of the gifts we would like to have given if we had the money. We all got some great gifts that year. Maybe the greatest gift was the realization that we loved each other and were fortunate we were together that year.

God gave the gift of His Son. Many times we forget the real reason for the season. This year take time during your Christmas gift giving to thank God for His gift of His Son.

Perfection

2 Yes, dear friends, we are already God's children, and we can't even imagine what we will be like when Christ returns. But we do know that when he comes we will be like him, for we will see him as he really is.

So many times we struggle trying to be perfect. We know what to do yet, we don’t do it. And the things we shouldn’t do somehow we end up doing them. I love the ministry at our church called Celebrate Recovery. I think I love it so much because it helps us recognize that no one can obtain perfection here on earth. We all struggle with hurts, habits, and hang-ups.

What is so very important to remember is that you are a work in progress. God doesn’t expect you to be perfect; he knows you will make mistakes. I take great solace in this verse in 1 John that says we won't be perfectly like Jesus until we’re able to see Jesus perfectly. That day is quickly approaching, the Second Advent . . . Christ coming after His Bride.

The Brightest Hope

The other night it was a beautiful clear night here in Southeast Texas. I looked up and saw the stars shining brightly. In the winter sky the star Sirius or the “Dog Star” shines brightly.

During Advent we often hear the story of the Bethlehem star. I know that was the star in the sky that guided people to Jesus but let me offer this. Jesus was the Bethlehem Star.

As a matter of fact when you look through the Bible at different names denoting Jesus, “the Bright and Morning Star” is one of the most common. Jesus brings light into a darken world. Take comfort in this today, even in the bleakest times, Christians have the brightest hope. That hope is Jesus Christ the Savior.

Digging for Treasure

A few years ago I ask my wife to get me a metal detector for Christmas. She did and I was so excited. I went out and began seeking for treasure in our yard. I ended up exhausted, with no treasure and a yard full of holes.

I didn’t realize that it was going to be so much work digging for treasure. Now living near the coast I look forward to taking my old Christmas gift to the beach where the digging will be easier and the treasures greater.

Did you know there are treasures in the Bible? No, not those kinds of treasures that you would find with a metal detector, but the treasures of God’s promises. The key in finding those treasures is digging into God’s Word. The greatest treasures are not usually found on the surface, you need to dig deeper. It takes some effort on your part but the Bible's treasures are found by those who dig for them. Dig in and stake your claim today!

Who Are You?

I find it interesting that many times our identity is tied in to our job or title. Many people look at me as a pastor. That is my calling, that is my occupation but it is not my identity. I am reminded of this especially during the holidays when I am with family and they know me as for who I really am. To them I am a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather or uncle who works as a pastor.

My occupation is a clergyman. I hope my identity is that of a servant. Jesus said, "You can tell what they are by what they do." Matthew 7:16 CEV. Who are you?

God is Not Against Us Because of Our Sin

I recently heard a statement that stopped me dead in my tracks. “God is not against us because of our sin, He is with us against our sin!” Wow!

So many of us believe that God is standing there waiting to whack us every time we mess up. That is not the case at all. Sin separates us from God. He loves us and does not want to be estranged from us. You see He gave His Son because He loves us and wants to have an ongoing relationship with us. So, as long as we are repentant He will stand with us.

"Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.

I remember one time in my life that I prayed and believed and didn’t receive. What happens when God doesn’t answer our prayers? Should we quit praying?

In that instance in my life, I put myself in a situation where I had to have a miracle to get me out of it. We seem to have a tendency to do that don’t we? I didn’t get the answer even though I had all the faith in the world. The result was a crisis of faith in my life. But through that experience I learned a valuable lesson.

Simply put . . .don’t be stupid. Use your head, don’t get yourself in those messes. God is a miracle working God but I don’t believe for a minute that He is running a janitorial service just to clean up our messes.

Caring Sharing Repairing

Date with Jesus

So my wife tells me we need to get back to having a date night. I think that is a good idea. It is times like those date nights when our focus is on spending time with each other that we get to know each other better.

Did you know that knowing Christ brings the only real meaning and purpose to the human soul?

Set up a date time with Jesus each week. Let me encourage you to spend time today getting to know the Him in a more intimate way. Though you intimate times with Christ you will discover the real meaning and purpose for your life.

Going Home

Driving home the other night I felt so defeated. I was frustrated with things really beyond my control. About that time I noticed that on the side of the road were markers, actually crosses were someone had died in a car wreck.

My thought turned from myself and the frustration I had been dealing with to the thought of going home. I am not talking about going to my residence in Alvin, Texas, I am talking about going to my real home. Heaven.

As I have read Revelation 21 & 22 God’s Word describes Heaven. Let me encourage you to skim through these passages today and see the place Jesus is preparing for us, our real home. It is pretty awesome!

The Bread of Life

I love the Subway sandwich shop commercials . . . “Eat Fresh!” Over the past few months I have been watching what I eat and I frequent the local Subway often. While I know I can get a low calorie/low fat sandwich there I really go because I love their bread. When you walk in the door you are greeted with the aroma of freshly baked bread and it takes me to a happy place.

I am reminded of the passage in John: John 6:35 (NKJ)

And Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.

Experiencing God to the fullest is what Jesus was talking about. Your spiritual hunger will be satisfied and your thirst for a full relationship with God can be quenched through Him.

The Christian Race

Kenyans - Isaac Kimaiyo, Lazarus Nyakeraka and Patrick Nthiwa are some of the top long distance runners in the world today. For years the Kenyans have dominated the sport of long distance running. There are many athletes that can run much faster than these three but few that can beat them in the long run. Their grueling training consists of hundreds of hours of running the mountain sides building up their endurance. Their bodies get conditioned to be able to take the punishment of the race.

We too are runners. Heb 12:1-2 says, “…and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”

Just remember the Christian's race is not a competitive event but an endurance run.

God's Answers

I have always marveled at the artistry and workmanship of late Boyd Cottington and Chip Foose. These guys have created some of the most awesome hotrods ever built. I marvel at how they could take something ordinary and make it truly a classic. Through their imagination, creativity and workmanship the end result of their projects far exceed the hopes and expectations of their clients.

God is like that too. Did you know that God's answers are wiser than our prayers? Think about that.
